Requesting Journal Articles and Books

UHMS members may request copies of journal articles and book chapters from the Medical Center Library's collection.

Document Delivery/ILL Service Highlights

  • Use to request journal articles and book chapters from the Duke Medical Center Library's collection.
  • We do not provide journal articles not owned by Duke or loan books to UHMS members.
  • Electronic submission via https://illiad.mclibrary.duke.edu
  • Requests are secure and confidential; username and password protected
  • Electronic desktop delivery for journal articles and book chapters 
  • 1 to 3 day turn-around for most requests (weekdays). Large numbers of requests may be processed over several days and the turnaround time may be longer.
  • Status information about requests is available online at any time, from any location

Costs/Billing

  • As of Jan. 1, 2020, UHMS members will individually be charged $8.00 for each filled article request. This is a significant discount over ordering directly from publishers, which can cost between $20 and $200 per article.
  • Charges will be billed to individual members monthly. Payment can be made online via credit card at https://payments.mclibrary.duke.edu/ill

First step?  Please Register!

Complete an online registration form and create a username and password which will allow you to place and track your requests. It is only necessary to register once.

To Register

  • Go to New User Registration form
  • Enter your first and last name
  • Select your ID type
  • Enter your E-mail Address
  • Enter your Daytime Phone Number
  • Enter your Mailing Address
  • Select your Status
  • Select your Organization
  • Choose a Username and Password
  • Re-enter the Password
  • Click on the Submit Information button

After completing the registration form, you may request materials, check on the status of requests, or change your user information. All requests for materials must be submitted electronically.

Requesting Materials

Go to https://illiad.mclibrary.duke.edu to request materials after you register.

Receiving Materials

Requests are processed from 8 am - 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

If you submit a large number of requests in one day, they may be processed over several days and the turnaround time may be longer.

Our document delivery system offers the convenience of having items delivered electronically to your computer desktop.

  • You will receive an email notification with instructions on how to access requested documents.
  • To view, download, or print the full text of these articles, you will need to have the free Adobe Reader installed and configured for your Web browser.
