NIH Data Sharing Policy

This policy applies to:

  • Any application seeking $500K or more in direct costs in any single year of the project period, or
  • Related special requirements of a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)
  • Sharing of Final Research Data for applications submitted on or after October 1, 2003

Genomic Data Sharing Requirements and Resources

Data Sharing Policy for Genomic Data --- Effective January 25, 2015

This Policy applies to:

  • Competing grant applications that are submitted to NIH starting with the January 25, 2015 receipt date;
  • Proposals for contracts that are submitted to NIH on or after January 25, 2015; and
  • NIH intramural research projects generating genomic data on or after January 25, 2015.

Human genome data must be submitted to NIH designated database, whereas non-human genome data may be submitted to any widely-used data repository (see partial list below).
